| | Contemporary Issues in Biocultural diversity GDF has launched a series of international short courses on contemporary issues and methods in ethnobiology, in support of undergraduate, Master's and doctoral programmes in diverse disciplines. Coordinated by GDF Director Gary J. Martin, they have been hosted by various universities in the United States, Europe and Asia. | | Urbanization and Ethnobiology in Amazonia
In the week leading up to the 11th International Congress of Ethnobiology (ICE) 2008 , a course on ‘Understanding local livelihoods, knowledge and practices in changing environments: the case of urbanization in Amazonia' is being offered from Saturday 14 – Saturday 21 June 2008 in Pucallpa, Peru. The organizing institutions include the Center for Environmental Research and Conservation (CERC) of Columbia University, Institute of Economic Botany of the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG), Global Diversity Fund (GDF-US) and Gobierno Regional de Ucayali.
With financial support from the Christensen Fund (TCF), we will award a limited number of grants to cover roundtrip airfare between Lima and Pucallpa, course fees, bibliography, software, local transportation, accommodation and meals during the course. Please note the following requirements before applying for the course:
1. at least an undergraduate degree in social or natural sciences;
2. demonstrated fluency in Spanish and ability to read academic articles in English.
Preference will be given to stewards of biocultural diversity and others who are engaged in research, teaching or applied work on ethnobiology, conservation and development. Candidates from Latin America will be given priority, including those from Northwest Mexico, which is a TCF priority region. Participants in the course are expected to attend the ICE in Cusco, Peru from 25 – 30 June (see www.icecusco.net for abstracts and registration deadlines). Candidates must demonstrate that they can cover their international airfare to Lima (e.g. through an ISE travel grant or in another way). The deadline for application is 10 May 2008.
